From an obscure short story. Pencil with Photoshop highlights and color.

Lyrarapax

Lyrarapax was a Precambrian Dinocarid (terrible shrimp) whose relationship to other animal life is still murky. Recent studies link it to Velvet Worms, a bizarre group of animals that live in South America.

Another Miniature World

This one is sort of based on Oak Creek Canyon in Arizona.

Portrait of a Friend

A little off the usual themes for me, I did a portrait as a gift for a friend. Working from a photo can be deadly, and the result lifeless. I think I put some life into it. I used custom Adobe Illustrator brushes, rows of tapering dots, for an impressionist effect.

Spindle World

Yet another floating space island microcosm. I'm kinda pleased with this one. Did not take long.

Elder Thing Painting a Primate

Pencil sketch. Who knew jester caps were invented by The Old Ones?

Yithians Interrogating Peaslee upon his arrival.

A very rough sketch to get my idea down. The Yithians have no spoken language, so must devise other means of communication with their unwilling soul guests. The cello-like device is meant to be simulating spoken English.

I started building element in 3D just to get perspective, but I got carried away detailing this one.

Yithian Again

Update: Just could not love the head anatomy, so I revisited an older idea from sketches. Much happier!

I always intended to make this an Astounding Stories cover to honor the original.

Closeup of 'printing dots.'

I revisited an older drawing, and used Photoshop to give it more realistic textures and shading. I am pretty pleased with where it is going. Initial drawings here.

My idea for Yithian life cycle:

Old One

(Update: added some subsequent images I forgot to include)

One of the first images I did last year when i started futzing with Photoshop brushes in 2009.

Another version I did a bit later, more controlled.
